Palmetto boys volleyball defeats Orlando Dr. Phillips on Friday
The Palmetto boys volleyball was able to secure themselves a win on Friday after having defeated Orlando Dr. Phillips in match that went on for four long and thrilling sets.
Not only did Palmetto secure a win over their rivals, they managed to secure themselves a seat in the semi finals of the state tournament.
The quarter-final match between the two teams took place at St. Andrew’s School. After Palmetto had bagged the win and started celebrating their well-earned victory while Orlando was heading out of the courts with heads hung low, the scoreboard read 25-17,
25-19, 18-25 and 25-20.
With their recent win, the Panthers were able to improve their overall number of wins to a figure of 19. These victories have been accomplished after having suffered losses that amount to be three so far.
The first set of the game started off with the Panthers taking control early on. They were able to assert their dominance by gaining points on excellent aces delivered down on Dr. Phillips. With the pressure on Dr. Phillips from the beginning of the game,
they could not significantly recover. All that Dr. Phillips managed to put in was a halfhearted effort into the first set of the game. As a result, it was not a hard job for the Panthers to take the first set of the game at 25-17.
The second set repeated the happenings of the first set of the game as the Panthers again took an early lead. Dr. Phillips tried hard to give some sort of a challenge to the Panthers but the Panthers proved to be unstoppable. They were able to pressurise
their rivals by raining down relentless kills on Dr. Phillips. The Panthers kept on pushing forwards until they had reached the final stages of the second set, which the Panthers bagged at 25-19.
A two set deficit sent a much-needed wake up call to Dr. Phillips. They were able to rally together in an effort to give themselves a much-needed third set win if they were to have any chance at the match.
The Panthers were faced with a rejuvenated team that was putting on a competitive display of volleyball skill. The motivation and energy that Dr. Philips displayed in the third set of the game led them towards a much-needed win at 25-18.
Unfortunately, for Dr. Phillips, the third set was the only moment of glory that they would experience in the entire match as the Panthers won the fourth set of the game at 25-20.
“We are thrilled to be able to advance to the next round,” Palmetto coach Kimberly Latshaw-Oritz said. “We can’t get over excited about one win.”
