Palos Verdes defeats Santa Barbara on Tuesday in CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs
A match of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs was held on Tuesday. The two teams that competed against each other were the Palos Verdes team as well as the Santa Barbara.
The contest between the two teams went on for four sets that did not fail to thrill the spectators. When the game reached it close, Palos Verdes had sealed the deal by defeating Santa Barbara by 3-1.
The victory comes as a much needed confidence booster for Palos Verdes as they obtained it by defeating the champions of the Channel League. By the time the night was filled with hoots of Palos Verdes celebrating their well deserved win and Santa Barbara
was heading out of the courts in frustration, the scoreboard read 25-16, 25-21, 24-26 and 25-15.
With their recent win, Palos Verdes have brought their number of wins so far to 23. They have succeeded in achieving these victories at the expense of incurring 11 defeats in all.
Both the attack as well as the defence of Palos Verdes was doing its job well and making it hard for Santa Barbara to play effectively. Palos Verdes kept on raining down relentless kills on Santa Barbara who had a hard time in efficiently blocking them.
On the other hand, Palos Verdes’ defence was making it hard for Santa Barbara to make any ball touch the Verdes side of the court.
Despite the fact that it was a well-coordinated team effort, some Palos Verdes players stood prominent in the entire match. Shane Dyer was able to keep the scoreboard ticking by posting a total of 20 kills during the game.
Dyer was supported by his teammate, Michael Shepherd, who helped in keeping the pressure on Santa Barbara by adding six kills of his own. Other than Shepherd, Danny Welch also made his presence felt by registering eight kills as well as four blocks.
At the start of the first set of the match, both the teams went in for the kill. However, as the game progressed, it became clear that Palos Verdes was the dominant party. They were able to take the lead and extend their advantage. After that point, Santa
Barbara kept trailing behind until Palos Verdes had sealed the deal at 25-16.
The second set was also bagged by Palos Verdes at 25-21. It was only in the third set that they lost to Santa Barbara at 24-26. However, Santa Barbara failed to tie the match as Palos Verdes bagged the fourth one at 25-15.
“This is huge,” Palos Verdes coach Patrick Lynch said. “To drive all the way to Santa Barbara and beat the No. 1 team in the Channel League, that's a big win for our program.”
