Pan Am Junior 2012: Phillip Chew, Cherie Chow tame Victor Moretti, Luana Vicente in group match
Mixed Doubles experts Phillip Chew and Cherie Chow continued with their top form and outclassed Victor Moretti-Luana Vicente in group stage of XXI Pan Am Junior Team Event on July 23, 2012.
This 41-minute tussle was part of a Group B match between Brazil and USA which was staged at Sherwood Park in Alberta, Canada.
Both contenders remained head-to-head for three exhausting sets before concluding this battle with final result of 17-21, 21-19 and13-21.
The twosome of Phillip and Cherie displayed superior badminton skills and enthralled their opponents in the opening and closing sets.
They laid foundation of their supremacy by clinching very first match point with a notable difference.
They did not waste time and launched a brisk attack to gain three-point advantage with 6-3 total. They maintained this lead all the way to mid-game break and finished the first half with a respectable figure of 11-6.
However, the opposing shuttlers made this segment of contest memorable by putting decent fight in later part of the game.
Victor and Luana narrowed the gap with 9-11 margin and then mounted pressure by reaching at fighting position of 15-17.
Though, they made every effort to bag first set but luck was not on their side as they had to face a 17-21 defeat.
The Brazilian duo did not lose heart after the first set loss and made amends in very next game. This time they came from behind and dazzled their rivals with a lustrous performance.
In first half, they kept low profile and stepped forward cautiously until 7-11 total before the interval.
They gathered pace immediately after the interval and caught their challengers at 11-11 score position. They did not lose this touch and established a respectable lead with 16-14 margin.
Phillip and Cherie tried hard to reinstate their authority but they could not hit the mark until the decisive figure of 19-21.
The US campaigners switched on their best after getting down in second set and served notice of their supremacy in the decider.
At first, they pushed their competitors on the back-foot with 11-6 and then sealed the victory with a staggering knock of 21-13.
