Pan Am Junior Championships: Mac Lee beats Diego Yong to secure Boy’s Singles quarter-finals spot
Canada’s Mac Lee continued his impressive run and surpassed Diego Yong in pre quarter-finals of Under-19 Boy’s Singles category in XXI Pan Am Junior Championships on July 25, 2012.
Though, this tussle was resolved in just two games but still the victorious shuttler had to sweat hard for 36 minutes to live up to the expectations of local crowd which assembled at Sherwood Park in Alberta, Canada.
Mac Lee setup a quarter-final clash with Jeffrey Kuo by registering a winning score of 21-18 and 21-15.
He set the ball rolling by clinching very first match point with a decent lead in final margin. He stunned his rival by keeping low profile in the beginning and then hammering him with a power packed campaign in final stage.
The Canadian campaigner moved forward cautiously in first half which resulted in inconsequential margin of 7-7.
At this stage, Mac Lee prevailed in four nonstop rallies and got into commanding position with 11-7 before the interval. He did not drop this pace after mid-game break and raised his total to 16-9 in third quarter of the set.
However, he lost focus and allowed his challenger to narrow the gap with five consecutive points.
Diego Yong mounted pressure by reaching at 18-19 but he could not go with same flow in ending rallies and lost first set with a tight figure of 18-21.
The second set started with some gruelling rallies as both contenders put all in their possession to gain an early advantage.
In the beginning, Mac Lee pushed his rival on the back-foot by clinching four valuable points but the Peru campaigner counter-balanced the situation with 4-4.
Diego Yong dominated in next couple of rallies to strengthen his grip over the game but this supremacy was short lived as his competitor stormed back with a strong reply and finished first half with 11-9 margin.
However, later part of the game turned into one-sided affair as Mac Lee did not give his challenger even a single counter-attack opportunity.
He made difference by gathering seven points in a row and then sealed a splendid straight-set win with 21-15 score.
