Pan Am Junior Team Event: Camila Garcia, Daniela Zapata beat Mikiala, Monyata in group stage
Women’s Doubles team Camila Garcia-Daniela Zapata forged a productive chemistry and toppled Mikiala Carrington-Monyata Riviera in the group stage of XXI Pan Am Junior Team Event on Sunday, July 22, 2012.
This encounter was part of Group A match between Peru and Barbados, staged at Sherwood Park in Alberta, Canada.
The epic tussle prolonged to 39 minutes and was resolved with 21-12, 19-21 and 21-7 score on the board.
Though, Camila and Daniela put a fluctuated performance but still they managed to survive after winning the opening and closing sets.
On the other hand, the Barbados campaigners’ magic prevailed only in second set and they had to face a 2-1 defeat.
The opening game heated up with a power packed campaign of Peru shuttlers who made a swift progress straight away in the beginning.
They dominated in four uninterrupted rallies after 4-3 and relished this initial advantage all the way to mid-game break. They did not drop the pace and finished first half with a notable lead in 11-6 margin.
After one-minute break, they injected more intensity in their attack and kept the opposing team at the lower end until decisive figure of 21-12.
However, following game saw the suppressed duo of first set rising from the dust to counterbalance the situation.
This time Mikiala and Monyata played with right attitude and fortitude to avoid a straight-set defeat.
Though, they were bit conscious in the beginning but couple of fruitful rallies helped them to come out of their challengers’ influence.
The Barbados shuttlers set the ball rolling after 2-5 and reached at fighting position of 6-5. They maintained this slight edge throughout first half and placed a respectable total of 11-9.
Later part of the game was filled with great sensation as both teams strived hard to oust their opponent but Mikiala-Monyata tipped the scale in their favour with 21-19 margin.
Conversely, third set of the match proved to be a one-sided affair as the twosome of Camila and Daniela did not give their competitors even a single counter-attack opportunity.
They bagged first half with 11-4 total and then magnified the impact with a mountainous figure of 21-7.
