Panagiotis Samilidis conquers Men’s 200m breaststroke heats: Day three – European LC Championships
Panagiotis Samilidis of Greece conquered the preliminary rounds of Men’s 200m breaststroke on third day of the European Long Course Championships in Debrecen, Hungary on Wednesday, May 23.
The 18-year-old Samilidis stayed prominently ahead of his challengers and sprinted his way towards the finishing wall for fastest qualification spot.
He continued his smothering efforts in the distant breaststroke event and cruised his way towards the finishing end for first position by producing a time of 2 minutes and 10.61 seconds.
With his alluring effort, he remained full body length ahead of Daniel Gyurta of Hungary, who finished his swim in second best place by reporting an effort of 2 minutes and 11.54 seconds.
Gyurta was chased by Marco Koch of Germany, who stayed 0.94 seconds apart and transpired on the finishing end for third best position by submitting a time of 2 minutes and 12.48 seconds.
Fourth best qualification spot of the race was secured by Igor Borysik of Ukraine, who stayed 0.12 seconds apart and tapped the wall with an effort of 2 minutes and 12.60 seconds.
Following that, the crowd witnessed stupendous efforts of Italy’s Arianna Barbieri in the Women’s 100m backstroke prelims. The 23-year-old Barbieri destroyed hopes of her opponents by occupying the fastest qualification spot of the event.
With her immaculate efforts, she remained half a body length ahead and clocked a time of 1 minute and 00.26 seconds.
Her fastest qualification effort was chased by her teammate, Carlotta Zofkova, who stayed 0.50 seconds apart and posted a time of 1 minute and 00.76 seconds for second position.
Third fastest qualifying position of the event was secured by Daryna Zevina of Ukraine, who remained 0.22 seconds slower and entered the semi-final with the timing of 1 minute and 00.98 seconds.
Subsequently, Jenny Mensing of Germany stayed 0.25 seconds apart and finished her swim in fourth best place as she posted a time of 1 minute and 01.23 seconds for fourth position.
Furthermore, these qualifying swimmers will face each other in the semi-finals of their respective events, where the top finishers will earn their way to the final round.
