Panagiotis Samilidis wins Boys 50m breast-stroke gold: Day six – 2011 FINA World Junior Championships
Panagiotis Samilidis of Greece won the gold medal of Boys 50m breast-stroke on the concluding day of the 3rd World Junior Swimming Championships, organised by the Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA), in Lima, Peru.
Samilidis captured the title of the single lap event, by submitting a fastest time of 28.27 seconds. His time was only 0.26 seconds slower than the championship mark of 28.01 seconds, which was made by Samilidis’s competitor, Oleg Utekhin of Russia, in the
preliminary rounds of the same event. The champion was nearly two seconds behind the world mark of 26.67 seconds, clocked by Cameron Van Der Burgh of South Africa at the 2009 Rome World Championships.
The gold medallist was followed by Akihiro Yamaguchi of Japan and Craig Harry Benson of Great Britain, who failed to overcome each other’s effort for the silver medal and remained only 0.17 seconds away from Samilidis. The duo of Yamaguchi and Benson stepped
on the victory stand for the second position, by reporting in an identical time of 28.44 seconds.
The duo was followed by championship record holder, Utekhin, who failed to sustain his fastest qualification spot of the event and ended fourth with a slightly sluggish time of 28.48 seconds. The Russian was trailed by Angelito Cassandra of Brazil, who was
just 0.14 seconds behind his preceding swimmer and occupied fifth finest spot of the swim with a timing of 28.72 seconds.
Meanwhile, Bastian Vollmer of Germany was the sixth fastest finisher of the event, as he clocked a time of 28.74 seconds. Vollmer was chased by Nicolas Fink of United States, as he was 0.04 seconds slower than him and posted a time of 28.78 seconds. Roman
Trussov of Kazakhstan was the eighth finisher of the event, as he touched the finishing wall in the respective meet and ended his swim with a slowest time of 29.22 seconds.
In addition, the arena enjoyed the commendable swims of all participants, while the position holders were invited on the medal rostrum after the completion of the session.
