Panamanian Roberto Vasquez takes on Mexican Mario Briones in a 12-round skirmish – Boxing News
Roberto Vasquez, the former WBA World light flyweight champion, will take on the Mexican surging pugilist Mario Briones, the owner of the current WBC FECOMBOX super bantamweight title, in his home country in a 12-round bout with the vacant WBA Fedelatin
super bantamweight gold up for the grabs.
The above bout will headline the event jointly promoted by the duo of Carlos Gonzalez of Pro Stars Boxing and Sampson Lewkowicz of Sampson Boxing LLC. The ring for the Friday night extravaganza will be stretched at Roberto Duran Arena situated in Panama
City, Panama.
Roberto, 28, has a clear upper hand over Mario when it comes to experience. The Panamanian has been in a total 34 encounters and came out victorious in 29. He has collected a huge 21 wins by knockout and is considered as a decent pounder with powerful jabs.
In addition Vasquez, infamous as the ‘La Arana’ or ‘The Spider’, is the former number one contender for the WBA Fedelatin super flyweight and WBA International super flyweight titles.
Unfortunately Roberto is currently facing a tough time in his careers as he has lost three of his last five bouts against pugilists who were bit less experienced than him. His recent loss came from the fists of Oscar Gonzalez, a brawler who was just entering
in his 14th bout.
Mario, on the other hand, is moving up in the world rankings skilfully and quite impressively. He has been in a total 23 bouts though seriously outclassed by Roberto in experience yet has a good win percentage. The 26-year-old has lost just one bout to AJ
Banal.
The bout had Banal’s WBO Asia Pacific bantamweight title on the line. During the bout, Mario was unable to convince the crowd and the judges who eventually awarded the bout via a unanimous decision to Banal.
Despite that loss, the Mexican ‘Maca’, made an impressive comeback and knocked Octavio Hurtado Ascencio senses in just the fourth round. Briones has collected four wins in his last five bouts. Moreover, he has the height advantage that will definitely help
him in collecting a win if he exploits it appropriately.
At the moment, both pugilists have odds in favour to some extent and the battle will be a tooth and nail one since Roberto will use his experience and Mario will throw powerful jabs from a considerable distance hence using the height advantage.
