  1. The Panasonic PV-GS39 is a miniDV tape based camcorder.

You need a firewire port on your computer and a firewire cable.

Connect the 4-pin side of the firewire cable to the DV port on the camcorder. Connect the other side of the firewire cable to the firewire port on your computer. If your computer does not have a firewire port, they are generally cheap - and easy to install - but since we don't know what computer you have, we can't know how to help you. If you are using a Macintosh and running OSX, then you probably have a firewire port because all Macs of the last 6-7 years had built-in firewire 400 ports (the only exception is the new Mac Air). If you are running Windows on a traditional pc, you may need to add a firewire 400 card:

Whether you get a 4-pin to 4-pin firewire cable or a 4-pin to 6-pin firewire cable will depend on which firewire card you install and the type of port it uses.

Firewire, IEEE1394a and i.Link are all the same thing. USB will not work for transferring miniDV tape based video. A USB to firewire converter will not work.
