Panasonic dmr e85h not starting up

Question

The dvd recorder shows no display, and wont start up. I have tried unplugging then plugging in. I've notices that the optical audio out led at the back is flashing when the unit is plugged in, so clearly it is getting power. Just cant do anything with it to get anything on display. Any help would be appreciated
