Panathinaikos vs. Zalgiris Kaunas – Power Rakings – Euroleague Basketball November 4
Only one game took place in the 2011-12 Turkish Airlines Euroleague regular season on Friday, November 04, 2011.
At OAKA, the Turkish Airlines Euroleague Defending Champion Panathinaikos remained unbeaten in Group B with a 92-75 victory over Zalgiris Kaunas. It was third consecutive victory for Panathinaikos and third straight loss for the
Lithuanian champions, who played their first game under new head coach Aleksandar Trifunovic.
Panathinaikos came out strong in the first quarter and held a 25-21 lead after 10 minutes but Kaunas limited them to 13 points in the second quarter and went ahead by 42-38 at halftime. However, Panathinaikos made a brilliant comeback
in the third period and carried a nine-point lead into the last quarter. They continued to play one of their best offensive games and went on a 10-0 run with seven minutes remaining to put the game out of the reach of Kaunas.
Zalgiris Kaunas Head Coach Aleksandar Trifunovic praised the huge victory of the defending champions and said, "Panathinaikos played better and deserved to win this match.”
Here is a brief review of some of the upstanding performances on the night:
Dimitris Diamantidis
The Reigning Euroleague MVP Dimitris Diamantidis stole the show with 16 points on an impressive 4 for 5 shooting from three-point range. Diamantidis “the Octoupus” grabbed three rebounds and dished out three assists in the victory.
Mike Batiste
Mike Batiste followed Diamantidis 14 points in their third consecutive victory. Batiste shot 4 for 6 from two-point range and hit all 6 of 6 free throws in less than 16 minutes of action.
Ian Vougioukas
Ian Vougioukas came off the bench with 13 points for Panathinaikos. He pulled down a game-high six rebounds and ended on 6 for 9 shooting from two-point range.
David Logan
David Logan also added 13 points in the victory. The player also stole the ball for three times, grabbed two rebounds and dealt out two assists. Logan, who finished his collegiate career as the all-time leading scorer in Indianapolis, hit 3 for 6 (50 percent)
from three-point range.
Nick Calathes
Nick Calathes played a better floor game this time and dished out seven assists. Calathes also posted seven points, grabbed four rebounds and stole the ball twice.
Sonny Weems
Zalgiris’ shooting guard Sonny Weems led all scorers with 21 points off the bench. Weems also contributed three steals and finished on a perfect 3 for 3 shooting beyond the arc.
Ty Lawson
Ty Lawson did all he could and added 14 points, four rebounds, four assists and a block. He was 3 for 4 from two-point range, 2 for 2 from downtown and 2 for 3 from the line.
