I'm a beginning chess player looking to improve. I'm looking at books by Bruce Pandolfini, and I'm looking for thoughts on "Beginning Chess" and his "Ultimate Guide to Chess" --which of those might I like?

  1. It is difficult for us to know, since we do not know you or your likes and dislikes in terms of books.  I would recommend you go to a large bookstore and browse through their books on chess and buy one that appeals to you.  That is the best way to start.  What works for me might not work for you.  Most books about chess will help you, especially when you are a beginner.  Just don't pick something too involved and complicated in its layout.  Best of luck with it.

  2. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_b/105-...

hope this helps  reviews on those books if you click on those books and scroll down.

  3. You can't go wrong with Beginning Chess!  I absolutely love that book because it tests you as you go and you keep a score of your progress.  This is especially nice because you can go back through the book many times and watch your test scores improve each time.  The book is very simple to follow unlike many chess books.

Another great chess book I'd recommend is Susan Polgar's Chess Tactics For Champions.  It teaches you how to create pins, forks, and skewers brilliantly!  It's a really fun book.  My game improved greatly after having read just the first ten or so pages!!!

Good luck!  You won't be disappointed with Beginning Chess!

  4. why dont you check out both to those books and see what it contains of your understanding.

if your a beginner then the beginners books is the obvious.

but there are millions of other chess books about so i suggest you go and browse.

pandolfini is a great chess teacher never the less, he taugh the famous international master josh waitzkin and many others who are very good to this day, so you may benifit a lot from it.

  5. I have read both of these books, and i thorougly recommend that u read Beg Chess first and then UGTOC. In addtion to these books, make sure u get lot of practice playing chess. If u are rated above 1200, skip Beg Chess and buy UTGTOC. This will save u much time and money

    Good Luck
