Pang Cheh Chang says shuttlers will learn to handle pressure with competitions like Kedah Open
Malaysian Women’s Doubles national coach, Pang Cheh Chang, is optimistic for the improvement of players if they get more opportunities to play in tournaments like the Kedah Open.
The Kedah Open 2011 ended on Saturday, July 16, at Alor Setar, Malaysia, where all top shuttlers of Malaysia including Lee Chong Wei participated, as it was the second leg of National Circuit tournaments.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has made it mandatory for all top shuttlers to participate in at least one domestic event a year, to make the sport more interesting for the fans. All top shuttlers played in the Kedah Open, which helped young
back-up players to gain confidence by playing against them.
Pang Cheh said, “Its good to have tournaments like this once in a while becauseif all they players do is just train and they can get fed up after long periods.”
The coach further added, “With competitions like this, players will learn to handle pressure better in international tournaments and they will be able to develop their character on court and become better players. It is encouraging to see my girls putting
in extra effort in training and competitions and if they can maintain consistency, they wil lslowly taste success.”
The BAM provided a superb chance to back-up shuttlers to prove their worth and come forward to become a part of the national team. It was also a superb opportunity for young shuttlers to display their talent and grab the attention of national coaches.
Many back-up player proved their worth in the Kedah Open by playing superb badminton against their senior opponents. The best performer among these back-up players was Mohd Arif Abdul Latif, who clinched the Men’s Singles crown in Alor Setar.
This kind of domestic tournaments, where all top players of the country participate, is a healthy step for the growth of the sport in the country. It will not only increase the popularity of the game among people, but also will elevate the standard of the
sport.
