Pang Cheh Chang wants Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong to play aggressive badminton at London Olympics
Malaysia’s doubles coach Pang Cheh Chang wants the top shuttlers Koo Kien Keat and Tan Boon Heong to play aggressive badminton at the upcoming 2012 London Olympics to cover their loopholes in defence.
Kien Keat and Boon Heong, who are currently World Number Eight in Men’s Doubles world placements, have not a strong defence which makes them vulnerable for the top pairs from Korea, China, Indonesia and Denmark.
The poor defence, bad service and lack of confidence were major elements that caused them to pass through a worst bad patch for the last 30 months.
However, the coach said that time is too short to make a considerable improvement in the defence of Kien Keat and Boon Heong and the only remedy for this deficiency is that they should be more aggressive in the court.
Cheh Chang stated, “Their attacking has improved but they are still weak in defence. The top pairs have learnt to make it difficult for them by reducing their attacking options but Kien Keat-Boon Heong must keep trying. They must always find a way to attack as they still have a chance to win a medal in London.”
While talking about the recent performances of Kien Keat and Boon Heong, the coach said that they have done well against the lower ranked shuttlers but they need to be more aggressive while playing against their higher ranked pairs.
He added, “Kien Keat-Boon Heong must find ways to maintain their attacking game throughout a match. They must also improve their service as this will give them better attacking options.”
Kien Keat and Boon Heong always get troubled while playing against Korea’s Jung Jae Sung-Lee Yong Dae, Denmark’s Carsten Mogensen-Mathias Boe and China’s Fu Haifeng-Cai Yun as all these pairs have better attack and defence which help them to overcome the Malaysian easily.
However, according to the coach, Kien Keat and Boon Heong can do well and can even win a medal at Olympics if they work on these aspects and improve their service and defence which is the key to win a Men’s Doubles match against the top shuttlers in the world.
