I suffered from panic attacks, badly, several months ago due to being in an emotionally abusive relationship and was also told I have generalized anxiety disorder. I have since broken up with that guy, am in a wonderful new relationship with a guy who treats me like gold, and I just started a new job last week, that I really like. Here's the problem, yesterday and today I got extremely anxious and felt like I was dying all over again, this has restarted all my fears that something is wrong with my heart, b/c I don't know why they are coming back, they have occured while I'm at work for no obvious reason, what should I do, please help????

  1. You need to go see a Doctor.  Mine put me on some meds for almost the same thing.

  2. What you're describing is normal. I'm going through the same thing myself -- things are looking up for the first time in awhile and suddenly my anxiety is way high. I think it's "Oh, God -- will I **** this up?" factor -- things are going good and you're getting scared that it will stop being good and go back to the way it was. Cognitive Behavior Therapy can work to help out those thoughts. Be gentle with yourself and take it easy for a little bit - you don't want to get your adrenaline too high (even for a good reason) right now.

  3. You are prone to panic attacks.

Increased stress can bring them on.

The situation of starting any new job is a stressful one.

    Since it's necessary to work,

take a 1/2 hr break if at all possible - you're "not feeling well"

take a walk or go out to your car for a nap

If possible try to take the rest of the day off, go home and take a nap.

To prevent future attacks,  do keep your job, but do all you can to lower your stress level in your life for atleast the next month.  Purpose to not commit to doing anything other than the bare minimum, and also do not watch anything scary or emotionally stressful on movies or TV.  Protect yourself.  When you do start adding other things to your life, add maybe only one or 2 things per week.

  4. During panic attack, body prepares to face a great danger and the emergency hormones are produced. The person may experience a heart attack feeling.

'Panic away' is a program that helped several people to escape from panic attack and anxiety

    Good Luck

  5. I have had similar panic attacks, they seem to come out of the middle of nowhere for no apparent reason. I would suggest seeing a psychologist about your anxiety. I have learned that panic and anxiety is something that every person has, but the level depends on the person. Those who do have panic attacks and anxiety are never relieved of the attacks that happen on and off. To be sure that you know how to handle the attacks when they come to you, the counselor will suggest ways to know what "triggers" them and how to calm yourself down when you find yourself in the middle of one. This helps tremendously. You might also like to look at books on panic and anxiety and many self help books can help you to understand your body and why the attacks are happening.

  6. I have recently started having panic attacks again to, but it has been a few years since I last had them. I went back on zoloft and I dont get panic attacks anymore. I know when things are wrong and when to worry but the zoloft (a low dose of 50 mg) helps me not to worry myself into a panic attack. I even developed reflux from my stressing and the dr told me it was GERD, it can be confused with heart troubles (google gerd symptoms)

Im not a fan of meds but hey, if you need it you need it. I know it works for me and I hate having anxiey issues so I take it.

    Good Luck.

  7. I suggest that you go see your doctor to discover if something can be done about the symptoms.  If they recommend a psychologist ask if you can receive Cognitive Behaviour Therapy to help you overcome it.
