Question:

Panic attacks driving me nuts

I've had my second panic attack this month and they say to breathe your own CO2 but it doesn't help. I usually have to get out in the fresh air which at 2.00am just wakes up all the neighbours.

What else can I do to help relax me and stop the panic attack?

  3. Get a perscription from your psychiatrist for Paxil or Klonopin (or other med).  I only have panic attacks every month or so, and it helps to take one just to keep it under control.

It's important to recognize the triggers, avoid them, reduce your caffeine intake, and combine medication with behavioral therapy.

  4. Find the root cause of them or admit to yourself the root cause of them and you are half way if not all the way cured.

Mine was someone else's power over me and so I cut the offender away and my environment, so I moved.

I was in denial about a close person's influence over me and allowed them far too much liberty with my emotions, finances and movements.

Drugs that relieve 'stress', just foggy up the solutions to putting a distance between yourself and the 'distress' caused by outside influences.

  5. I learned these things in the hospital... and first let me tell you that going for a walk is a great coping mechanism.

First, tell yourself, "I am having a panic attack, this is only temporary, this will pass in a few minutes."

Then, like with yoga, try counting your breathing.  It helps keep your mind focused on something other than the panic.

Lastly, like you're already doing, do something physical to expend the energy.  If the walking is waking up the neighbors, possibly you could pick up an inexpensive stationary bike at a yardsale or on craigslist or something.  Doing something physical also helps keep your mind off the panic.

All the while, keep positive, telling yourself it will pass in minutes.

Medicine is not the best cure for panic attacks because they don't last long.  By the time the medicine starts working, the panic attack is over.

  6. i went to the doctors about mine, and they sent me to a therapist.  at first i was like 'no way!'  but i did find it quite helpful they taught me breathing exercises, and other ways to help me out.  they gave me some medication as well which helped a lot although medication doesn't cure you, i think therapy does.  taking medication for panic attacks is like taking a pain killer for a broken leg.  it will only work for as long as you are taking the meds but once you come off them they'll be back again! that's why some sort of therapy to help you realise why this is happening is the best option.

  7. I have been on a Dr. prescribed medicine called klonopin for several months. This has been a God send to me. My panick attacks always happen at the same time every night. My Dr. says this is linked to a time frame that something  bad happened to me. Mine always hit at the same time of night that I lost my father. My heart goes out to you... Good Luck
