Panthers QB Cam Newton first alternative for NFC Pro-Bowl team - NFL News
Quarterback Cam Newton may just get his chance to play in the upcoming 2012 Pro-Bowl match after being selected as the first alternate for the National Football Conference side.
The Carolina Panthers rookie has been impressing, fans and the media alike with his powerful performances and skill. The rookie has set alight the National Football League in just his first season since being drafted from Auburn college as the first overall
pick in this year’s drafts.
Newton however had some tough competition in the quarterback position this year. The likes of Green Bay Packers Aaron Rodgers, New Orleans Saints Drew Brees and New York Giants Eli Manning are above Newton in the votes.
The chance for Newton to get a game in Hawaii however, is bright. Rodgers and Brees’s form this season makes it more than likely that one of their team will qualify for the Super Bowl XLVI counting them out of contention in the Pro-Bowl roster.
Cam Newton has been on fire the quarterback has broken the record for the highest number of rushing touchdowns in a season by a quarterback with 14. Newton also has 20 passing touchdowns the quarterback has covered 3,893 passing yards completing 295 out
of 492 attempts.
The Carolina Panthers also have wide receiver Steve Smith and Centre Ryan Kalil in the National Football Conference Pro-Bowl team. Both players are Pro-Bowl veterans with Smith selected for the fifth time in his career while Kalil has two previous appearances
in the event.
"It's an honor and a privilege to be selected because it shows the respect of your peers. Next to the Super Bowl, the Pro Bowl is the biggest honor in our profession," Smith said.
Kalil also thanked teammates for helping him perform better and getting the chance to make the Pro-Bowl for the third straight year.
"You are only as good as the guys you play next to, and I have been fortunate to play next to some really good offensive linemen and have two good backs and a heck of a quarterback," Kalil said.
The Pro-Bowl will be played in the Aloha Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii. The game will take place on 29th January with the Super Bowl XLVI taking place a week later in Indianapolis.
The Pro-Bowl will pit some of the best players from the National Football Conference and American Football Conference against each other and making the roster is an honour for any player.
