Question:

Pantry Moths!?

I have pantry moths for the first time in 20 years of living on my own - if you have an innovative way to get rid of these things, please let me know. I have done the following:

Thrown away anything grain related.

Washed all cans, bottles, other items in the pantry/cabinets

Wipe down the cabinets

Steam cleaned all the cabinets (every nook and cranny)

As of this morning, the only things in the pantry are cans, bottles and other things such as the coffeemaker. Everything has been washed, steamed, rinsed.

If I close the pantry door, an hour later there are a couple of moths in there. I can not figure out where they are coming from.

Oh yeah, I wiped everything down with vinegar as well. Any ideas?

  1. You can hang several moth balls in there in a sash or just place them on the shelves. Hope that helps you out!

  2. Good girl!  I had an infestation of those critters last spring and they almost drove me crazy.  Now that you have your pantry all cleaned out I completely recommend BioGanic insect powder.  It's made from cloves, etc and is food safe.  I spritzed it around the edge of my pantry shelves where they meet the walls.

Be sure you've found their host food source.  Mine was a bag of bird seed in the basement.  They were all over the house, though, until I found where they were coming from.  Dry dog and cat food can be hosts, too.

To help avoid the problem keep problem foods in plastic containers ( like Gladware or Tupperware ).  Plastic bags are not enough to keep the moths at bay.  All my pasta, grains, cereals, etc are in containers.  Pet food, tea, anything they might be attracted to is in a container.  You can also store things like flour in the freezer to keep them away.   They are transported in on groceries ( I once had them come home in a bag of trail mix ) so you're always at risk for them to re-appear.  Just keep your pantry as inhospitable as possible and they shouldn't be a problem.

  3. I never had them till I moved to the house I am living in now. Did like you, cleaned etc, stored stuff in containers (they managed to get through the lip of the plastic containers..grrrrrrrrrr!)

I found a product cutely named Pantry Moth Trap....it has a sticky coating and a pheromone patch. You assemble it into a triangular shape and the moths get stuck on it. Works well.

They do come in rice, pasta, etc from other countries. I stopped buying rice from Asia and that seemed to be one of the biggest problems of my infestation. Has seemed to helped in the problem.

  4. instead of mothballs try hanging clove or sage
