Paolo Cesar Montoya Cantillo wins the opening stage of the La Ruta de los Conquistadores 2012
Paolo Cesar Montoya Cantillo succeeded during the 110 kilometre stage 1 of the La Ruta de los Conquistadores 2012.
He completed the 110 kilometre chase between Herradura - Universidad para la Paz, San José in a total time of 5 hours, 1 minute and 19 seconds and restricted the race favourites.
"I was surprised to be in the front and stay in the front," Montoya told Cyclingnews after crossing the finish-line.
"I attacked in the middle of the course. On the first uphill, I had attacked alone and my legs had responded very well".
"They never caught me, but they were very near, within one or two minutes".
"Then I recovered in the last 15-20km. I took back a little bit more time then. It was a difficult race, especially on the uphills”.
“Today was humid, and I had to drink a lot, but I still was cramping," he concluded.
Todd Wells finished 2 minutes and 8 seconds behind at the second position with Alex Grant, Deiber Esquivel Benavides and Milton Ramos occupying the third, fourth and the fifth positions in the respective order.
Dennis Manuel Porras Murillo achieved the sixth position with a deficit of over 18 minutes on the race leader while Federico Ramirez Mendez achieving the seventh position.
Jose Alfredo Montoya Alvarez, Alexander Sanchez Calderon and Enrique Artavia Cedeno claimed the eighth, ninth and tenth positions respectively.
Similarly, Monique Pua Mata wins the women category of the race after her outstanding performance to claim the top podium position.
She took a total time of 5 hours, 54 minutes and 11 seconds to receive the honours as she overcame her compatriot Sonya Looney with a convincing margin of 1 hour, 27 minutes and 25 seconds.
Ligia Madrigal Moya, Yessenia Villalta Coto and Cristine De Mezerville claimed the third, fourth and the fifth positions in the respective order.
William Antonio Valverde Barquero wins the Men 30-39 category of the race with Pablo Sanchez Rodriguez, Allen Castro, Edgar Zumbado and Fabrico Brenes Quiros achieving the next four positions.
Fernando Salazar claimed the Men 40-49 category of the event with Enrique Saborio Pozuelo, Shawn Gregory, Manfred Avila Kopper and Willy Quiros Flores achieving the third, fourth and the fifth positions in the respective order.
