Paolo Lorenzi, Michael Lammer through to the second round – Madrid Challenger 2011
Sixth seeded Paolo Lorenzi of Italy thrashed out German tennis pro Daniel Brands 6-3, 6-3 on Tuesday to book his place in the second round of 2011 Madrid Challenger series here in Spain. The
Italian made most of his opportunities in a match that lasted for only 1 hour and 25 minute on the red clay courts of Madrid. Breaking the serve at regular intervals, he made his opponent run for his money. He will be hoping to
continue his good form in the upcoming matches of the tournament as well to lift his first trophy of the year.
The running season has proved to be a quiet one for Lorenzi as he slipped to world number 112 in the Association of Tennis Professional rankings. To achieve better results in his future fixtures, he must improve certain areas of
his game play significantly. If he can maintain his current level of play for this entire week, he certainly has the chance to go the distance this time around.
Looking for a place in second round of the Challengers tournament, Lorenzi made a terrific start to the match as he broke his opponent in second game of the opening set take 2-0 game score lead. Serving with control and accuracy,
the Italian had no problems holding on to his service games as he raced to an impassable 5-2 lead.
Hitting his ferocious forehand and backhand winners down the line and cross court, he did not allow his opponent to breath. Firing a blistering serve ace, he made a couple of set points available to him and then converted the second
one to take 1-0 set score lead.
The second set was also played on a very similar note as both men displayed some high quality tennis. Taking advantage of his opponent weak serve, Lorenzi established complete control over the contest. Breaking the serve twice,
he raced to 5-1 lead. And although Brands broke back once to stay in the set, he failed to stop his opponent from earning a well deserved straight sets victory.
Meanwhile, lucky loser Michael Lammer of Switzerland battled past Jerzy Janowicz 6-4 , 7-6 (4) to the second round here in Madrid.
Lammer looked in stunning touch in a competitive first round match. Breaking the serve at regular intervals, he put his opponent under immense pressure. Janowicz did well to take the second set into a tie-breaker but he could not
handle the pressure well enough as the match ended in straight sets.
