Paolo Lorenzi battles past Juan Pablo Brzezicki into quarterfinals – Carisap Tennis Cup 2011
Italian Paolo Lorenzi, ranked 122nd in the world, defeated world number 174 Juan Pablo Brzezicki of Argentina in three sets 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 in the second round of Carisap Tennis Cup at the clay courts of San Benedetto
del Tronto in Italy on Thursday. It took Lorenzi two hours and 42 minutes to undo his opponent in a tough contest.
The Italian and Brzezicki broke each other on a number of occasions in the first set. The Argentinean drew the first blood as he broke Lorenzi in the opening game of the first set to take a 1-0 lead but he failed to consolidate
on it, getting broken in the very next game to level the score at 1-1. Brzezicki broke again in the fifth game to take a 3-2 lead but it was all Lorenzi show after that as the Italian claimed four straight games, breaking his opponent in the sixth and eighth
game to win the set 6-3.
Lorenzi fired 76 percent of the first serves and three aces in the opening set. The Italian grabbed 68 percent of the first service points. However, the six feet tall lost majority of the second service points as he converted only
eleven percents of the second serves into points in the first set. Lorenzi capitalised on three of the six break point opportunities he created on Brzezicki’s serve and saved two of the four break points he faced on his own serve in the opening set.
With winning momentum on his side, Lorenzi took an early lead in the second set as he broke Brzezicki in the second game to take a 2-0 lead. The Argentinean broke back immediately and held his serve in the next game to tie the
score at 2-2. Brzezicki broke again in the sixth game and capitalised on it to win the set 6-3.
The Argentinean converted 52 percent of the first serves and 75 percent of the second serves into points in the second set. Brzezicki won two of the three break points he received on Lorenzi’s serve and saved two of the three break
points he faced in the second set.
Brzezicki and Lorenzi broke each other once in the first ten games of the third set and equalised the score at 5-5. The Italian claimed decisive break in the eleventh game, bagging the set 7-5.
Lorenzi will play compatriot Simone Vagnozzi, ranked 199th in the world, in the quarterfinals.
