Paolo Lorenzi bulldozes compatriot Antonio Comporto in 2nd round – Todi Challenger 2011
As the quarter final seats of the Todi Challenger filled up on Thursday, 15thSeptember, Paolo Lorenzi turned his head towards his 2nd round match against Antonio Comporto to secure his own berth. Playing at
the Umbria Tennis Centre, the two Italians played each other for an hour and fourteen minutes before the higher ranked Italian took away the match effortlessly, winning 6-2, 6-1.
Lorenzi, ranked world No.135, had been up and running after his dreams for a long time, however, he could never get the break. Anyhow, his 2nd round rival, compatriot had fewer hurdles for him as he knocked out every
chance of Comporto’s winning. Although the two had similar statistics regarding the past 10 matches they played, Lorenzi advantaged from his rankings and used it in the 2nd round.
The tie started off with Lorenzi taking out the match opener serving first, 1-0. Breaking the 22-year-old, the older Italian eased and extended his lead to 2-0 and then to 3-0 on his serve. Cutting down the lead, Comporto won his
first game on the set and switched back the serve to the 29-year-old.  
With scores at 4-1, Lorenzi winning game 5, the Italian broke his counterpart to extend his lead to 5-1 before he got punished for his over confidence and lost a breakpoint next, 5-2. However, Lorenzi did get stumble and pushed
on a speculated a marvellous net play to break Comporto and take the first set win, 6-2.
Moving on to the next set, decider, Lorenzi once again served first and initiated the scoring, 1-0. Comporto, however, levelled the scores this time and stood to return his higher ranked rival. Winning game 3, the 29-year-old broke
and extended his lead to 3-1 and served next to stagger the young Italian some more.
Serving game 5, Lorenzi pulled on another win before he broke Comporto for the second time in the second set and took his lead to 4 games, 5-1. Finally with the last game on its way, the Italian served out the 22-year-old winning
the set 6-1, and the match 6-2, 6-1 and danced his way into the quarter-finals.
Statistically, Comporto fell down recording a low winning percentage of his serves. The 29-year-old succeeded with 33 service points and 24 returns totalling 57 points to his win.
Lorenzi now sits in the quarter-final round as he plays Diego Junqueira, the Argentine, for a spot in the semis.
