Paolo Lorenzi trounces Maximo Gonzalez to progress to the semis – Bucaramanga 2012 CH
Two veterans, Paolo Lorenzi of Italy and Maximo Gonzalez of Argentina, put up an exciting show during the quarter-final of the Bucaramanga Challenger on Saturday. After an enthralling battle, second seed Italian dumped the
fifth seed Argentine with the final scores of 7-5, 3-6, 6-1. 30-years-old Italian celebrated the triumph like he has won the challenger tournament; punching the air in delight and screaming in joy.
The Argentine had a psychological advantage of 2-0 head-to-head lead but it had little effect on the game, as the Italian was playing much better than expected. His stamina was impressive and his ability to dictate terms
in the match flabbergasted the people present at the arena.
Second seed Italian kicked-off the proceedings with a successful serve break that gave him the initial edge. The lead was carried till the seventh game before the Argentine broke serve to level the scores at 4-4. The Italian
wasted little time in regaining the lead as he broke serve in the eleventh game to push the scores to 6-5 in his favour. He served for the set and bagged it successfully with a thumping ace across the court.
The Argentine picked up momentum in the next set and broke serve in the second game to take the lead. Both players traded breakthroughs in the sixth and seventh game that retained the lead of the inferior ranked Argentine.
Second seed contestant tried hard to break serve to level the scores but his luck was out and the Argentine won the second set extending the match further.
Both players stamina was drained out at that stage and the aging factor played a major role in that aspect. They started the set with an exchange of breakthroughs that kept the score tied at one game apiece. Lorenzi broke
serve in the fourth game to take the lead.
The Argentine lost heart at that moment and lost all his steam, appearing fatigued and tired. His opponent tamed him across at the court. Three successive serve breaks did the job for the Italian as he booked a berth in the
semis of the tournament.
