I heard that you should get a pap smear before getting pregnant. Apparently if you do not, the obgyn will have to give you one and this can result in miscarriage?! Is this true??

  1. I have never ben pregnant, but I did just go see my Ob-Gyn.  She did a pap and ran some blood counts in addition to STD's and HIV tests.  She explained that it is good to have my "base levels" on file in terms of blood sugar, cholesterol etc.  Likewise with the STD's and HIV... I had never been tested, but she recommended doing it before getting pregnant... just to be sure.  All of my tests came back fine, so they have their base levels for everything and I got a clean bill of health, so what happens, happens.  I would recommend doing the same thing.  Go in and talk to your Dr.  if you don't have one, now is a great time to get established with one.  That way when you are pregnant you have a Dr. that has seen you from pre-conception all the way through your pregnancy.

    Good luck to you

  2. I had a pap done 4 months pregnant and was fine.

  3. whether you get one or not before coming pregnant, they give you one at you first appointment after becoming pregnant, and I think miscarriage was a big risk they wouldnt make it a routine

  4. Sweetie, that's if you're planning. but how many women get pregnant and they don't even know it. If your doctor run tests on you, I'm pretty confident that he/she know what he/she's doing. Don't worry!

    Good Luck.

  5. No true at all.. Your obgyn will give you a pap on your first or second prenatal visit. they have to in order to check for diseases even if you had one done recently..

  6. obgyns will prefer to have a pap test done, but if they feel it's not safe for you to have one once pregnant i dont' think they'll do it, you can ask a fertility specialist online for free for advice, try fertilityties.com

    good luck!!

  7. no miscarriage risk.  you will routinely get a pap at a first pregnancy visit unless you happen to have had one recently.

  8. I believe there is a small risk but the doctors know what they are doing. If your pap smears are up to date then they don't need to perform another one whilst you are pregnant or before concieving. I wasn't given a vaginal examination at all until I went in with some bleeding at about 28 weeks. If you are planning to try and get pregnant and your pap smears aren't up to date then by all means go have one done. But the doctors won't do anything that will put you at risk unnecessarily

  9. It's not true.

My doctors have always given me one at my first prenatal visit. It's customary.

  10. No, that is not exactly true.

First of all, you should be getting a yearly exam.  There's no reason why you need to get one prior to trying to conceive.  As long as everything was normal at your yearly exam, no need for any additional ones.

Second of all, most doctors perform a vaginal exam at your first prenatal appointment.  Its routine.  If it truly was an exam that caused a miscarriage, it wouldn't be a routine procedure.

Third of all, during a pap smear, absolutely nothing is done that could potentially cause harm to the unborn child.  The doctor simply takes a look at things and gets a swab of your cervix to check for diseases.  Nothing ever penetrates the cervix nor causes trauma to the cervix, hence there is no cause for concern with the pregnancy.
