Question:

Pap smear and breast exam?

by  |  earlier

I am pregnant with my first child and going in for my first ob appointment in two weeks. I was wondering when I go in and get my pap smear and breast exam done can my husband come in the room with me? Or would the doctors/nurses prefer him to be out in the waiting room? I am scared of getting these to things done. Any advice to help me not be nervous.

  1. My husband came with me to my first appt and he sat through all that.  So it's really up to you and what you are comfortable with.

  2. i always have my mom or my boyfriend of 2 1/2 years with me. they dont mind..

  3. My doctor is totally okay with the father of the baby coming in with these visits.  My husband came in with me before I was even pregnant, but we were discussing trying and she talked to him about any questions he had and treated him like one of her patients.  I am going for my first ob appointment in two weeks also.  He will be going with me.  I think that the first visit is the most important one for your husband to be at because he can hear first hand sort of what to expect and he can be there to help you during your pregnancy.  If he can, you should try to get him to come to every appoint with you, but definately the first one is very important.  I think it is good that you are bringing him with you.

As far as the pap smear goes, it really isn't that bad.  It is just a little uncomfortable and it happens so quickly you don't even think about it.  It will go a lot better if you are relaxed because if you are tensed up, especially down there, it will be a lot more painful.  I know that I was scared to death with my first appointment and it isn't bad at all.  I was nervous for no reason, and it made my blood pressure high.  The last three years that I have been, I knew what to expect and my bp wasn't high after that.  The breast exam is pretty simple.  Your doctor will have you lay on your back and raise up one arm and will just feel of your breast; they are checking for growths.  Then they will move to the other one.  The only thing I didn't like about it when I got it done was that my doctor's hands were extremely cold.  Other than that, nothing to get worked up over.

I think that your husband being in the room with you will also help you to relax.  Good luck, and I promise it isn't as bad as you may think.

Oh yeah, congrats on your pregnancy; it is a wonderful feeling, isn't it?

  4. Thats all up to you but know that its the law to have a nurse or assistant in the room with a male doctor

  5. Most places don't mind, but if they do mind and you really want him in there, DEFINITELY say something. One of my former doctors told me he didn't want my hubbie in with me and I raised a big enough stink that he let him anyway. It's your body and you should be comfortable. Most doctors respect that. Don't be too nervous. Everything will be fine. :)

  6. I don't think they would have a problem if you want your hubby in there. It would be your choice I would think. Good Luck and congrats!

  7. my fiance went with me... and he has gone to all the appointments with me... and don't be scared... but you will get use to it... your going to have to go every month.... then in the third trimester... ever 3 weeks... then every 2 weeks... and the last month you have to go every week....

  8. yeah he can. I had my sister in there with me and she was looking at everything. They cant tell you that you cant have anyone in there with you because of mal practice laws. Good luck! Congrats!

  9. ITS YOUR CALL

  10. its youe decision my mom came with me one time i was getting pap exam and they asked if i wanted her in there i said no lol.
