  1. This surname is from Crete (my place!). It means "son of  priest", our priests can marry, and traditionally have large families. It is one of the more common names.

    And yes, it is popular in the Aegean islands too.


  2. I disagree with the answerers above, although the ending -akis is found mostly in Crete, it can also be found in many Dodecanese islands, i have 2 friends one from Rhodes and the other from Karpathos with the same -akis ending.
