Question:

Paper shreds? Can it be cat litter?

I just shredded a bunch of paper and instead of recycling it, I'm wondering if I can use it as cat litter? Will the ink hurt anything?

It would just be easier for a few days and I'd save some money- cat litter for two cats and three foster kittens is getting expensive!

If no, that's fine, too. But, does anyone know of any cat litter substitute that WORKS? I'm not talking dirt. What do you use?

If nothing is available, then I'll stick to cat litter!

Thanks!

  1. As far as I know shredded parper wouldn't hurt them. It might not work as well as litter in the covering up the smell department, but if you don't mind the smell then go for it!

  2. Yesterday's News is a brand of cat litter that is made from recycled newspaper so I think that shredded paper is fine. I would mix the paper with baking soda to keep the smell down. Change the paper regularly and take the solids out everyday. An enclosed box (with a lid) will also keep the smell down.

I personally use Yesterday's News and sometimes put some very cheap litter on the bottom and always use baking soda.

  3. Paper litter stinks and doesnot cover p**p effectively. But, yes, the cat will probably use it.

  4. If you don't mind a horrid stinch than the paper will work.  If you don't use cat litter, you can smell the cat p**p everytime they use the bathroom, and it's harder to scoop.  There is a brand of cheap litter call "Yesterday's News" and that's recycled paper pellets.  I tried it with my three cats, and it was awful scooping and smelling.  I actually have the biggest rubermade tub you can get, I cut a hole in the side of it, and then I put the lid on it and keep A LOT of litter in it.  If you scoop it daily, you almost NEVER have to buy new litter, just keep it clean.  good luck, and i hope i helped.

  5. I would stick to using cat litter. It is easier to clean because of the clumping formulas, and would smell a lot less. The cat's waste will just be sitting on the paper. Some cats might refuse to use it, so I would stick to using cat litter.

  6. paper shreds work great, its esp. useful if your cat has been de-clawed!  The cat litter can infect the cats paws where the claws were removed.  You may have to change the paper shreds more often due to the smell (cat little absorbs odor) but hey, to save money, go for it!!

  7. Shredded newspaper is fine. However, switching litter (especially abruptly) can cause cats to urinate and defecate else ware. Also, most people use clay or clumpable litter, training foster cats to use shredded newspaper may be a problem once they go to a new home, unless the new owner is okay with keeping them on that type of litter. I'd stick with a fine sand type substance, since that is what most people use for their cats. Have you tried scoopable litter? It may last you longer.

  8. Actually I think I heard somewhere about using shredded paper for cat litter? I don't know much about it though so I suggest researching it if you havent already =) good luck!
