Question:

Paper stock certs?

Back in 1988-1996 I received Paper Stock Certs from a company were I was employed. After I left the company the stock split, and merged with another company and finely merged with another company. About a year ago, I started the process to put my paper stocks into my account with Alex Brown. Well, after sending the stock certs three times, they kept getting return because no one could find any information on the stock. I finely found some information about ComputerShare. I found some paperwork to convert my original stocks to the merged company. I called ComputerShare and was told to send them a letter to their DOV department. Well I just received a letter back from what I believe is the DOV department, stating they only are required to keep info for six years and no longer had any information on the stocks. When I was on the phone with ComputerShare, I was told the DOV kept info for all stocks that were no longer being traded. DOV is a separate from the active stocks. So now that you have the background, where do I go from here to get these paper stocks made electronic? My agent at Alex Brown does not know where to go from here. Any advice, please.

  1. I am no expert on this, but I don't think Alex Brown was trying very hard.  Maybe you should consider another broker.
