Paragraph rules in letter writing?

Hi!

I'm writing a formal letter at the moment, and I was wondering about paragraph rules. Do you still have to adhere to them in terms of including a topic sentence and concluding sentence in each paragraph when you're writing a formal letter?

I'd be very grateful for some help.

Some people say that those rules are obsolete and that "times have changed" to a point where you can relax.  However, it is still the proper thing to do.

Can you do away with them?  Sure.  Does that make it right, even if it is widely accepted?  Absolutely now.

If you want it to be right and proper, then stick with the paragraph rules.
