Paraguay Women defeat Bermuda in last encounter of Pan American Challenge Cup: 1-0
Maria Servian Giosa scored the game-winner in the second half of play and had an assist, as Paraguay notched a single-goal victory over Bermuda in the final group match of the 2011 Pan American Challenge Cup that took place on August 4 at the Deodoro Hockey
Complex in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
It was another shocking defeat for Bermuda which lost the fourth game in the row and finished the tournament without a victory. They lost the first game in the hands of Brazil 3-0 which was a bad start from them in the crucial fixture. They failed to improve
their status and lost the next two games in the hands of Uruguay and Guyana by same six goals. Bermuda improved their game and limited the opponent Paraguay only for a single goal, but failed to get into the scoring-net to win or level the match.
Bermuda’s Iman Smith, while speaking to the media stated that they were very disillusioned. She added that they entered into the field with a great morale; however, they failed to deliver results. She added, “So our play was disappointing. We fought and
at half-time we tried to forget the first half. And I thought we played better in the second half. We have lots of young players. This is my third tournament playing for Bermuda and it is a lot of pressure I must say.”
Bermuda’s trainer Dafydd Hermann-Smith was of the opinion that they were getting improvements in their games; however, they had not participated in many tournaments. They seem to forget all their experience when they move for the next assignment, he added.
Both Paraguay and Bermuda came to the field with a mission to take either side down. However, the Paraguayan line-up has had little edge over the opponents owing to their previous records in the tournament.
The Women from Bermuda, particularly the defenders displayed outstanding performance in the first thirty-five minutes of the match. However, they failed to score any goal in the period, as the strikers from two teams carried out attacks against each other
but to no avail.
Keishae Robinson of Bermuda was awarded a yellow-card in the 22nd minute of the match after she committed a foul. But the first half was concluded at 0-0. In the second half action, both unfolded the period in quite impressive way but all in vain
in the first 20 minutes. In the 56th minute of the match, Maria Servian Giosa, the skipper of Paraguay scored a goal and sealed the victory for her team. It was the only score from the two teams and Bermuda lost the fourth consecutive game in the
Pan American Challenge Cup 1-0.
