  1. My severe macaw does that. & hes perfectly normal. But if your really concern take him to your vet.

  2. Hi,

All species of birds bob their heads to express a lot of different emotions. Usually they're excitement, anger and love. Here's some help with their body language:

Excitement: Excitement is usually accompanied by two-stepping, or rapid movement to both the left and the right, while the bird looks at you from the side of one eye

Anger: an angry bird will also usually also fluff up its feathers, stand in a pretty stationary spot and lean down low while it bobs, looking up into your eyes. They usually do this either very slowly or very quickly.

Love: this kind of head bobbing is unmistakable. A bird in love uses head bobbing to crane its neck against its crop (pouch of food above the 1st stomach), to bring up pre-digested food. It will bring its open mouth to whatever part of your body is closest to it, usually the fingers, or the mouth if it's on your shoulder, and try to feed you. Sometimes it will really deposit food on you, other times it will just mimic the action.

Two out of three reasons indicate that your bird really enjoys your company. If it's the third reason, say "Thank you" when your bird does it, then walk away, so you don't encourage it.

    Don't worry, it's normal :)

  3. my cockatile does that alot. i dont know why. but ive had him for like 8 years and one day like 2 years ago, he just started bobbing his head. i dont know why but its kinda funny. if it worries you alot, take him to the vet or call. they will have an answer for you.

  4. The motion you are describing, the bobbing of the head, looking like it's vomiting food are actully signs of wanting to mate!  Congradulations your feathered friend is all grown up!   You see parrots (yes, your parakeet is a parrot) show affection for one another by feeding eachother, so when your 'keet bobs it's head, it's trying to reguritate food to the one it wants to mate with, to feed them.

Now if s/he's doing this motion towared you, you may want to discourage it as much as possible, as it's terribly confusing for the bird.  So as a start, whenever s/he starts bobbing just walk away, also don't pet him/her anywere but on their head, as in the wild, only their mates preen them on their their body.  If you can also have someone else feed her/him for a little while.

Something real cool though, is now that your your parakeet is old enough to mate, their cere (the small thing above their beak with the nostril holes in it) may change color!  Either it'll turn to a sort of crusty brown, which means it's a girl, or it will stay the same or become a darker blue!  In which case you have a boy!

Hope it helps! And if you ever have any questions on behavior, diet, ect.  Feel free to e-mail me!

  5. It is throwing up something. It might have ate too much, but that doesn't usually happen. My budgies do that to each other. It shows love and affectionate to another budgie if they throw up to them. My green budgie has been doing that as well.
