Parakeet baby help???!!! Please help me!??? :/

O.k, so I have this one parakeet Mona Lisa and she's had a couple of guy parakeets in her life, but sadly, they've passed away. She's about four years old in human years I guess, and has never had any babies... then this week I've been babysitting a friend's pair of parakeets: Snuggles and Bella! :) lol! Anyways, Snuggles is the guy and Bella's the girl, and they came in their own cage. But I guess I wanted them to interact with each other so they kind of went back and forth into each other's cages. Then, I just noticed today there were four eggs in the cage of my parakeet, on the bottom of the cage though, where their c**p lands, lol, but I just noticed them today, and don't know if they just appeared today or what, because I didn't see anyone lay eggs and such, so maybe they did their buisness at night, lol, I have no idea. Some questions I'm thinking is that maybe my parakeet was pregnant with a past mate, or that she had babies with snuggles, or maybe snuggles and bella are the suspects...I have no clue! And like when I found the eggs, none of the parakeets were bothering with them. All three of them were in the cage that Snuggles and Bella came in. So are they like miscarriages or like there's no life in them, so we should throw them out? Please help, I don't know what to do. Sorry for my rambling, and peace out. :)

  1. i think you should wait and maybe they'll hatch.

i guess and after that maybe you can put all the birds together and maybe one of the girls will give the baby

attention and then that'll be the mom.

or you can just take all the birds to the vet.

but for now i suggest u to take the eggs to

a person that actually keeps eggs like chicks

and wait till they hatch. idk but thats my suggestion.

  2. First of all birds don't get "pregnant" like mammals do, because the hens will still lay eggs whether any sperm has been deposited or not.  In mammals the embryo will develop inside the mother but with birds the egg is laid first and if it's fertile (and viable) the embryo will develop shortly after nesting starts.

Sperm deposited in the female is viable for 1-2 weeks depending on the conditions and species and it takes 24 hours to produce an egg so unless your other males just died recently its very unlikely they had anything to do with fertilizing any eggs.

Most parrot species only lay eggs every other day or spread them out in increments but never more than one every other day because the hen needs to divert more of her own calcium to form the egg shell.  If you have 4 eggs in the bottom of your cage there are a couple scenarios to consider:

    1)  Your hen has been laying eggs for at least 7 days now and you need to pay more attention

    or

    2)  Your hen and her new buddy have been laying eggs for 3-4 days now, laying 2 eggs each.

The fact that the eggs aren't being nested upon does not mean they aren't fertile and anything can happen if they've had access to the male long enough, but the eggs are generally viable for a few days without nesting before they can be considered abandoned.  In order for the embryo to develop it will need heat and moisture from the parents and if they never nest then the embryo won't develop and you can then consider them lifeless.

Your best bet is to leave them in there and see what happens.  You certainly don't want to discard them and then have the hens try to replace them with more eggs because that uses up too much valuable calcium in the hen's body and is not healthy.

    Hope this helps.
