Question:

Parakeet question!?

by  |  earlier

I got two really young parakeets awhile ago, thinking they were both males.

Well, it turns out its one male, one female.

Will they mate at all? What conditions does there need to be for them to lay eggs?

Thanks a bunch.

  1. First of all, how certain are you that one is male and one is female? It is extremely hard to tell the difference, even for an experienced aviarian( I think thats how you spell it). Unless you have done a blood test, that is the only 100% way to know the difference. And if they are male and female you'll need a breeding box( there is a variety to choose from), and some nesting material.

  2. If you're sure that it's one female and one male, they'll most likely mate if kept together. In fact, they can even turn aggressive towards each other if they don't like each other (similar in humans) -- so there's no guarantee that they will mate or even like each other, but there's a good chance. If you separate them, they'll obviously not mate. If you want them to lay eggs, it's necessary that they like each other (not up to you) and they'll need a nesting box (a small wooden box) and nesting material (dried straw or cotton).

  3. they'll mate if the're at least 9-10 months, and if they like each other.  u'll need a little bird house and some nesting material in it for it 2 lay eggs in.

  4. just a warning, unless the mother bird is protecting the eggs, take them out. When males are extremely happy they lay eggs.
