Parakeet question ?

Well, I have a female parakeet that is about 1 year old. I think she's lonely so I want to get her a friend. Somewhere on the internet I read that you can't tell if a parakeet is male or female until they're about 1. I wanna get a young one, so if i accidentally get a male will they definitely breed ? And how can I prevent breeding ? I really don't want to have to deal with little eggs and such..

Also, will 2 female parakeets bond as well as a male and a female ?

  1. Get a guy parakeet. That way it's better, & about the breeding... I just make sure my birds aren't, they do play around... that's ok.

  2. male would prbably breed, and no, two females would fight hardcore.

  3. You can tell a Parakeet's gender at about 6 months old, but it's easier the older they get because the older they get, the more sexually mature they become, and the brighter their cere becomes.

If you get your female a male, the chances are great that they will breed. Budgies are very prolific breeders!  The best way to prevent breeding would be to get a cage that has a removable divider, so you can house them together without a nest box during the year and then seperate them during breeding season.

I breed Budgies, and they will not breed unless I offer them a nestbox during the right season and under the right circumstances. But if you leave them in the same cage together year round, they will breed and the hen will just find an uncomfty place to lay her eggs.

The best cage to get for your birds, if you do get another, would be the HQ double Flight:

That way, you can allow them to live in what for a Budgie's size is considered an Aviary, and they will have plenty of room to fly and play, but then during breeding season, you can stick that handy divider in to prevent breeding!

If that cage is a little out of your budget, you could also consider getting two smaller flight cages, like:

And keep them together during the year, and move one into the other cage during breeding season (Fall & spring).

But the reason I reccomend the first is that with the divider, they still can interact.  But I suppose if you placed the smaller cages close enough, that would help as well.

2 Female Budgies are less likely to get along without issue because females are the aggressive s*x in most 'Parakeet' species.  They may fight over the water/food dishes and toys and best perching areas.

  4. You can always get another cage.  At least they can keep each other company that way.

  5. Parakeets are social birds, if you give her enough of your attention and she responds, getting another parakeet will diminish that relationship.  You can tell whether it is male or female by the color of the nose of the beak.  If it is pink or brown, it is female, if it is blue it is male.  It usually shows around 4-5 months old, not a year. The best way to prevent breeding is to get both females.  They will bond, but not as well as a male/female.

  6. they will only breed if they have a nestbox, if there is no nestbox you have no egg. But the way to tell males and females apart is by the colored part of their beak. A males upper beak is a blue like color, while a females can range from a beige to a pink. But if you decide to get three make sure they are the same s*x because if two decide to breed say if you do decide to get a nestbox it would be devastating because females will kill chicks that are not theirs out of aggression and some would say jealousy.

  7. Well I used to have two male parakeets and one female and they never tried to breed. But I'm not so sure.

Good luck. Sorry I'm not much help '_'

  8. noi have 2 males they're ok wit eachother but not that interactive and reeeeely LOuD

  9. you can tell if they are a female or male before they are one you take them to a avian vet it dont cost that much and it dont take long.and there a very good chance of them breeding they tend to get very sexual in about spring but they can have eggs any season of the year you can prevent them from not getting a nest if they dont have a nest they dont have no where to put there eggs and no where warm enough for the eggs, soon they'll there they can breed anymore.and theres about a 50 50 chance on them getting along there the sam s*x they will bond witha heavy chace depends on the bird and some just like there privacy but budgies are breeded with a big flock and in the wild live with a big flock so they probally will not care what s*x they are , hope this helped you good luck with your budgies!
