Parakeets or Canaries--which one for a pet?

Question

Im trying to decide wheather to get parakeets or canaries and to get one or two. The thing about the parakeets is i've been reading that they like to fly around outside of the cage, but we have a cat, and we probably wouldnt be able to do that. But I also want the bird to talk and sing alot. I really dont know which one i should get, so someone with experience with either type of bird please help! Thanks!

Both are very good beginner birds as long as ur willing to put in the time and commitment ofr each. Parakeets are excellent first birds. i have had 2 in the past and they were lovely pets. like many other parrots they need a good size cage preferably one that allows them to fly if you plan on keeping them inside the cage with your cat but they do require some out of the cage time with you at least 30 minutes a day. they also need a basic pelleted diet along with fresh greens and fruits at least every other day( i offer sprouts which i get at stop and  :) canaries on the other hand are more for show than for companion birds but if your willig to put in the time and commitment to train a canary, its probably the better bird of the two for your lifestyle. canaries have beautiful songs and they can probably learn to sing on command and perch. so in the end i think  a canary would be your best bet especially if you have a cat. but still excersise caution with your cat and bird. i hope this helps and sorry about my long answer:) good luck and if u need any more info on either bird please feel free to contact me:)

First of all, parakeets make a lot of noise, yet rarely/if ever talk.  They are fun pets & make a big mess.  They can be taken out and played with, and are quite acrobatic.  Best to have two or more.

Canaries are beautiful, sing up a storm and require little attention.  They don't need to be let out of the cage and don't play like the parakeets.  Just a clean cage fresh water and a healthy diet.  Males are the singers and you only want one.  These have always been one of my favorites (Grandma always had one).

I have a parakeet!! yes they love flying but only supervice cuz they can get hurt...if u have a cat just put the bird on a safe place to fly cuz they need to fly so they dont strees out!! they are really lovely birds they sing,play, very good companions..and they can learn tricks even if it takes a while!! GET A PARAKEET:)
