Question:

Parallel parking for driving test?

I live in PA and have my permit. I'm practicing my parallel parking so I can be ready for it once my test comes (which is next month). How picky are they with parallel parking? Like, do they pay attention to small things like where your hands are on the wheel and which mirrors you look in and what not?

Everyone I see parallel parks differently (like either using their mirrors or looking over their shoulder), so I don't know which is the correct way.

  1. You are going to have to use both the mirrors as well as putting one arm over your seat...

  2. There are 2 important things to do before starting a parallel park -

    1. Make sure the space is big enough...It should be at least 1.5 times the length of your vehicle.

    2. Have a good start...You should be about 2 ft from and parallel to the vehicle in front of the space you're trying to get into.

The right side and rear view mirrors will be essential...Make sure they're adjusted properly with right side tilted down a bit so you can see the ground.

Your head will be on a swivel doing this maneuver - checking the right front corner, right rear and back...Even if the vehicle has a backup camera display, ignore it...You still have to use the mirrors.

This is one effort that is better done with one hand...Get a little sideways in the seat, but still keep a foot on the brake.

Take it slow and maintain control of the vehicle

  3. they look for safety and technique knowing every ones technique is different they want to see you park in the spot safely within the right number of tries and even if you fail that part you can still pass the test just don't panic

  4. FIRST OF ALL.. READ THE BOOK IT WILL TELL YA THE PROPER WAY TO PARALLEL PARK. THEN PRACTICE THE SAME WAY THE BOOK TELLS YA TO. STATES DIFFER FROM STATE TO STATE AS FAR AS LAWS AND STUFF. ALWAYS USE YOUR MIRRORS, AND LOOK OVER YOUR SHOULDER BECAUSE YOU DO HAVE BLIND SPOTS, BUT AGAIN DO IT JUST LIKE IT SAYS IN THE BOOK IF YA WANNA PASS. GOOD LUCK

  5. Don't go by the way you see people doing it, do exactly what the book says, and chances are even if it's not a perfect parking job as logn as its fundamentally sound it should pass. Good Luck!
