I'm thinking of becoming a paramedic, but I'm also thinking of becoming a nurse. Which one would you do, become a paramedic and become a nurse, or just become a nurse.

  1. It depends on what kind of job you want - there is def. a lot of excitement being a paramedic - but, to some extent, you can do more medically when you are a nurse.

  2. An important aspect of becoming a paramedic is that they work 24-hour shifts. Some people absolutely love that! They work 2 days a week, and have 5 off. Pretty good deal! Paramedics certainly have my respect- I know that I couldn't do it. It would be much too emotional for me.

Nursing is a decent career to go into. High demand for nurses, in *all* areas of health. That's a big plus, imo, as human beings usually feel "pulled towards" certain areas (neurology, pediatric, gastrointestinal, etc). It can be very rewarding to work in the area/s you feel so passionately about.

  3. I think a nursing career would offer you a great many more opportunities and professional independence. Some nurses become flight nurses, working on medevac helicoptors providing on-the-scene care and transport to a trauma center, which is similar to what a paramedic does.

However, the required time and educational costs to become an RN are probably higher, although scholarship money may be available to you.  Best of luck to you.

  4. There is a big difference in the pay scale.  Paramedics usually don't make as much as nurses.  And nurses don't make enough, period.
