Question:

Paranoid about Night and Falling Asleep?

I'm always having troubles getting to sleep and feeling safe at night.

I'm obsessive about locking the doors. I lock them all and go to bed, but I always go down a second time and check again. I'm usually awake most of the night, especially during the summer and weekends.

I'm affraid that someone will come in to my room and kill me/try to break in and harm me or my family.

I hear the slightest noises and I get really sweaty and scared.

I hate the dark.... I wish I had a lock for my door in my room.

Do I need help? What can I do?

  1. I am sorry you are feeling so afraid. Your room should be a safe place where you can feel secure. A very easy solution to part of this is to have a lock installed on your bedroom door. Another thing that might help is to make a plan, just in case your worst fears ever came true, so you would already have your response figured out. Keep a phone by your bed so you know you could call for help if you needed to. See about installing security lights around the exterior of your house that operate by detecting motion.  This would discourage prowlers and make you feel safer. You could do other little things like have a nightlight and keep a small baseball bat under your bed within easy reach. Tell your family about your worries and maybe they will have some ideas too, and maybe they can help reassure you. By this time, you will have covered most of your options and maybe you can relax a little and get some sleep. I hope things work out for you, dear. If these steps do not help, maybe you could talk to your doctor and get some relief from your fears. And don't feel bad...I like to double check my locks too.

  2. I am the same. I'm no therapist but, has anything happened to you in the past, at night time or in the dark? The reason I'm asking is that after years of therapy, I realised the reason I was affraid of night time/darkness is because my grand-pa used to abuse me in his dark basement. I'm not saying you were also abused but I think you should go have therapy to try and find out why you have this phobia...(don't mask your problem with sleeping pills cause they are addictive and will only help on the surface.) You need to go back in your memory and search for when this fear started and most likely you'll pinpoint what's causing it.

    Hope I helped, take care;)

  3. i feel like this sometimes :/

  4. You should definitely see your doctor as they can give you some anti anxiety meds to take at night so that you can sleep. They can refer you to a mental health evaluator as well to help you control the obsessive thoughts and actions of locking the door. Try playing some music soft so you dont hear the small noises but you can still feel like you can keep a ear on things. Try taking a sleep aid or doing something relaxing at night to wind down so that you can fall asleep easier. I hope that you get over this and get to feeling better. Good luck!!
