  1. You might check out these websites:

    http://www.nami.org

    http://www.schizophrenia.ca/files/Rays_o...

    http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/schizop...

They have a lot of very good information on schizophrenia.  The first three websites have booklets in pdf format that you can download and save for future reference.

There is also an excellent book, "Surviving Schizophrenia: A Manual for Families, Patients, and Providers" by E. Fuller Torrey, Fifth Edition.  I know Barnes & Noble has it.  Amazon.com only has the 4th edition.  That is very good reading and tells a lot about schizophrenia.

  2. My Aunt has this disorder and I have Schizophernia (As did a few other relatives), just not this one, mine is different the the Paranoid sub-type.

Don't be worried. Your Dad is still your dad. And to 9Suns, you're wrong you're think of multiple personality disorder, which is FAR different then this disorder.

Schizophrenia is one of the most damaging of all mental disorders---causes its victims to lose touch with reality. They often begin to hear, see, or feel things that aren't really there (hallucinations) or become convinced of things that simply aren't true (delusions). In the paranoid form of this disorder, they develop delusions of persecution or personal grandeur. The first signs of paranoid schizophrenia usually surface between the ages of 15 and 34. There is no cure, but the disorder can be controlled with medications. Severe attacks may require hospitalization.

  3. Paranoid schizophrenia is a serious mental illness. There are different types of Schizophrenia which are all chronic mental illnesses. People with schizophrenia don't perceive and respond to the world as most other people do. Paranoid schizophrenia is a subtype of schizophrenia. People with paranoid schizophrenia hold untrue beliefs (delusions) or hear things others don't hear (auditory hallucinations). The onset of schizophrenia in men is usually in the teens or 20s. The onset in women is usually in the 20s or early 30s. Paranoid schizophrenia tends to appear toward the later end of this range.Although there's no cure for paranoid schizophrenia, medications and well-coordinated mental health care services can help people manage the disease. Your mother doesn't want to worry you. That is why she is telling you don't worry. As long as your Father is being treated, your Mother is right... don't worry. You might want to use the web to learn as much as you can about the disease so you understand it. It's basically a chemical imbalance in the brain. If there is something you don't understand, it's ok to ask questions. Here is a start to start learning about the disorder:

  4. I was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia a year ago, so lol I really know what it's like. I'm young too, btw.  Schizophrenia is one of the most severe and serious mental illnesses. The main symptoms are hallucinations ( hearing voices, seeing things, feeling things that aren't really there), delusions ( when a person has completely false belief but can't be convinced otherwise), disorganized speech and/or behavior, and having a flat affect. The person might not always have everyone of those symptoms. Paranoid schizophrenics tend to not be really disorganized or flat as much as other schizophrenics but have really active hallucinations and delusions.  If he's in treatment you don't need to worry. It will be hard for all of you guys but there are things they can do for him to help. There are medications that really improve schizophrenia and therapies too. If you need to talk to somebody you can email or yahoo message me. Rae_Of_Sunshin3@yahoo.com

ps- google schizophrenia so you can learn and understand more about it :)
