Question:

Paranormal activity For a while now since my grandmother has passed away I keep having serious night terrors?

They start with as soon as I get to where I am almost asleep but still semi conscious (aware of my outer surroundings but right on the brink of sleep) I start having flashes of very disturbing images of things that I either find completely repulsive or very upsetting. After that I feel like I am being pulled into a sleep state that I cannot come out of. I get so lethargic I cannot force my way out of it. After this happens I feel as though I am being held down by a very strong immovable force. I put all my strength into fighting off this feeling as it makes me feel helpless & is very scary. When I start trying to make myself come out of this I become completely paralyzed. My fists/feet clench & I literally cannot move at all for anywhere from 45 seconds to 3-4 minutes. When I finally force myself out of this I propel upright out of bed and am gasping for air as I have not been able to breathe the entire time the attack has been happening. It is very real and scary. any ideas?

  1. I use to think I was awake and reach over to turn on the light and it wouldn't come on, then I would realize I was still asleep. Sometimes I would go through up to nine repetitions before finally being able to wake up. Sometimes it would feel as though there were other "beings" in the room. Sometimes I could not move, but that is not what would cause me to be afraid. The truth was, the fear was a component of the experience. I would oftentimes mistake the "scene" as causing the fear, but the fear (and I mean heart out your throat, heart attack fear) would already have been there before I entered the scene. Once I forced myself to be aware and review as much detail of the experience so that I would be aware of it when it happened, I began to learn how not to be afraid. Once the experiences quit being fearful, they dissipated. That was about 18 years ago, and every now and then I still have one, but as soon as I recognize what is happening, the fear goes and I come out of the experience or go back to normal dreaming. One thing I learned is, even though I thought it was happening just as I went to sleep, most times I had already been asleep for awhile. Although both can occur, the ones that were most terrifying were the kind that came after I had been asleep for awhile. I had lots of people tell me I needed to understand what I was "experiencing," but that is incorrect. Mostly what I was experiencing was mental gibberish and meant nothing at all. You don't have to know what it means, you just have to know it and learn to not fear it. One commonality that always strikes me is the fighting, like we are trapped under water and we are trying to get a breath of air. I always had that feeling of suffocating, and I have noticed that as a common theme. Not surprising that the unconscious is often imaged as the ocean. I think we know very well we are fighting to regain consciousness, because awareness is life. One word of caution. It is very dangerous to make this into something more than what it is. I have seen people go down that road and there are plenty of people out there who will be happy to assist you in enhancing your delusions, and conversly, your fear. Best of wishes.

What you are describing, as someone has mentioned earlier, is sleep paralysis, which is a normal bodily function.  When you sleep, your body naturally paralyzes itself so that when you dream, you do not act your dreams out for the simple reason that you might hurt yourself.  Sleep paralysis is when you wake up and your body is still in the paralyzed state.  Also when you dream the part of your brain that perceives the presence of another person or people is also activated, which is why many people experience a frightening sensation of someone standing over them or next to them when they are paralyzed.  This wears off in a matter of secons or minutes, as you have described.

    From what I have read, most people experience sleep paralysis (myself included) when sleeping on their backs.  Unless you already sleep on your side or stomach, I would suggest you try this, although sleeping on your stomach isn't the best for your spine.

    The nightmares you are having could be triggered from the grief of your grandmother's passing, which could be triggering you to wake up before your body is capable of movement again.

    Your experience is almost certainly not linked to any kind of paranormal activity, as frighting as it may be.

    I would like to mention that, many people mis-identify nightmares and frightening imagery during sleep as "night terrors".  Night terrors are a phenomenon that usually occur in children and/or people with underdeveloped brains, be it from brain damage or whatever.  When a person has a night terror they begin thrashing and screaming in their sleep; this occurs at a deeper level of sleep (level 4) than REM (which is where dreams/nightmares occur) and when they awaken they have no recollection of why they were screaming.  I in no way mean this in offense to your question, I just thought I would clear the air.  Although, "night-terrors" does sound cooler than regular "nightmares".

    Anyway, try sleeping on your side or stomach until these nightmares subside, and if they don't and they cause you to have trouble sleeping, I would suggest you go talk to your doctor, who may prescribe a sleep aid, but you don't want to jump into taking medication right away.

Its very common, they call it sleep paraylsis...if you look up sleep paraylsis, youll proberly come across alot of other experiences from plenty of other people....Youve descibed exactly what happens....just look into sleep paraylsis, and you should find your answers there....It happens to me quite often, but then alot more happens which i will not go into here....

  7. I everything I would have said.  I would fully argree with ~~333~~~ and I think his name is Steve if I got the name Steve wrong, it is the person right under ~~~333~~~.  She just made it short sweet and understandable.
