No one really knows.

I've even heard a ridiculous comment made that the ghost didn't believe in god and that's why it's earth bound.

There can be residual hauntings, where the ghost plays out its daily life just like you and I in our daily lives, only they seem to be trapped in a time loop.

Then you have ghosts that keep playing back a tragic event in their life.

And then you even have intelligent hauntings where it seems a ghost is making contact with you when you ask it a question.

I don't believe they do. Once you've passed on your gone from earth. It is written to be absent from the body is to be present with God. I have never see a so called ghost. Seem lots of dead people, but no ghost.

Well the classic theory is they have unfinished business. Some believe they have free will and some choose to stay because they have been told they are going to h**l so being a ghost is better than h**l.

Others will say ghosts are grounded here by a tragic unexpected death and they do not know they are dead, and some believe ghosts can come and go at will. I heard John Wayne does and is often seen at the Alamo.
