Can you become a para in the middle of the year (not middle, but around October)? I wont get my test results back til the end of Sept. Would it be possible to start then? Also, how do you find listings for those positions?

  1. All districts hire paras throughout the year check with your local school district website to find positions on the site.

  2. Yes, you can become a para any time actually.  A great way to start getting your feet wet is to sign up for their "sub service".  You would be put on a list to call if someone calls in sick.  It's pretty short notice usually, but you would be able to "try on" a lot of different classroom environments.

I found my position in this way. I started as a sub, found an excellent position for my personality, and ended up full time.   I found my position by responding to an advertisement in the classifieds.  The best bet though would be to go to your county education, and school district websites.  Look for job listings, human resources, etc... The information should be there. In our area, you're put on a "hire list" and when openings come up, you're called to interview.  Good luck.

  3. yes --districts hire year round---sometimes tehy add more students-a para quits or is fired---the position was never permanantly filled.

look in the help wanted section of teh paper--under education, teacher aide, aide, assistant, special ed, etc.
