Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew believes that holding on to all his exiting star players was more important than diving into the transfer market to add new signings.
Newcastle enjoyed a terrific campaign in the Premier League last season, where the club finished fifth and managed victories over the likes of Manchester United and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786.
The club defied expectations, and was a firm favourite to finish in the top four and get a Champions League spot. However, Newcastle still managed to qualify for the Europa League and will be targeting a top four finish this season with all the star players
they have.
Many expected the club to make a large number of signings in the summer and add to their already strong squad. However, this did not happen. Despite being linked to a host of international players such as FC Twente’s http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Douglas-c11600 and Lille right back Mathieu
Debuchy, Newcastle only signed http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Vurnon-Anita-c36486 as their biggest summer addition.
The club did however sign a number of promising youngsters such as Romain Amalfitano and Gael Bigirimana. What is most important is that the club managed to hold on to players such as http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Yohan-Cabaye-c37423, despite interest from a number
of top European clubs.
Newcastle manager http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alan-c4244 Pardew insists that it was vital to keep the squad together going into the 2012/2013 campaign and is happy with his team. Despite having many players out injured, it is still too early to make any judgements about the club’s performance,
and Pardew believes that his squad will achieve great things this season.
"We did most of our work in the transfer market last summer," he told
the English press. "That was the important period for this football club because it was either going to take us forward or take us backwards.”
"Fortunately we made the right selections and it took us forward, and then we have secured them (the top players) as well. You could argue that it was probably better than we might have imagined, so to secure them again was great."
The manager is hoping that his senior players will help all the youngsters settle in and help them develop at the club.
