  1. It is important to keep in mind that honesty, diplomacy, and tact are vital in a parent-teacher conference. The key element is to establish a rapport with the parents and encourage them to get involved in the educational well being of their children. To understand how a child acts or fails to act in class, you will need to get a read on how the parents conduct themselves. Kids model their behavior from their parents and their home environment, so getting to know the parents somewhat will give you an advantage in charting the best course of action in getting the most out of your conference.

There is no concrete method that works for every situation, however, your creativity, imagination, and sensitivity towards each individual conference will dictate your level of success. Just be natural, friendly, and approachable, I would keep a variety of hot teas, beverages, and snacks available to break the ice when first meeting the parents, chat a little about non-school related issues and then ease into the conference. Once you're in the conference, stay on track, and offer positive reinforcement on weak points.

    I hope that this helps.
