Do you think your kids feel confident in coming to you with their problems(problems being drugs, relationships, s*x, school, etc.)? If not, do you guys had an open relationship?

If its not an open relationship, why do you think its that way?

  1. I have a very open relationship with my kids. I tell them accurate information on even the most "taboo" subjects, and I honestly tell them my experiences when they ask for them.

  2. I don't have kids yet, but I always knew I could go to my mother with my problems, and still do.

  3. I have always let my children know that I would love them and back them even if they came to me and told me they made a huge mistake.  I admit my faults and apologize to them when I s***w up - so they know it is part of being human - and it is OK to make mistakes as long as you take responsibilty for them and try to fix them.

My son got in trouble at school when he was defending another child.  He got in school suspension for a week.  he came to me and told me what he did.  I went to school with him every day to drop him off and we worked out some real good lesson for him to learn from the experience:

    1) Nothing anyone else ever does is a good enough reason for you to act badly.

    2) You are responsible for how you choose to react to a stiuation.

    3) Mistakes are not fatal - but you cant fix them if you dont own up to them.

Every day he recited the rules and I made sure he learned and was not shamed.  You can't learn to act well without occasionally acting badly every once in a while.  We all deserve the right to learn!  My children know I will tell them about my past failures in a non judgemental way so they can learn from my past.

Most importantly though, my children know they are wanted, loved, and that I really like them!  I enjoy their company and would be lost without them - and I tell them that every day!

  4. Yes, very open relationship...
