Question:

Parents Won't Let Me Get a Job?

I'm turning 16 soon this month. As a child, I have not really received much from my parents apart from basic needs. I understand the lesson they are trying to teach, which is the value of a dollar and hard work. Whenever I asked for something, I was always told to buy it myself once I get a job. So from that point on, I never asked for anything ever again. Fast-Forward to today, I'm approaching the age where I can work part-time. So imagine my disappointment, when I asked if I could work part-time and they refused. Now if any of you are wondering what i'm using this money for, i'm going to pay for driver's training, insurance, and a car, to which my parents laughed at me. Now we aren't a poor family because they afford to go to the casino every week and lose hundreds. Have any advice for my predicament?

Please don't call me a spoiled brat or anything negative.

  1. Maybe they won't let you get a job because they don't want your schoolwork to fall from your priority list. Tell them that working won't interfere with your schoolwork. If that doesn't work, tell them you'll just work on weekends so you'll have plenty of time during the week to get your work done.

Let us know how it goes....

  2. despite what they may think, your parents don't have to approve of you getting a job.  there is no place on a job applicant that requires your parents to relinquish consent for you to work.  you do what you think is right and you can't go wrong.  just don't ask for rides to work.  ride your bike or walk.  save your money, show some responsibility and purchase a reasonable car that is both fuel efficient and cheap to insure.  if your parents do not recognize your independence and maturity, that is their loss and you will only have two more very short years before you're out on your own... after that, to h**l with them!

update:  your parents are going to move with you when you go to college?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!?

you need to put your foot down by the time you are 18... your parents are clingy and irresponsible!  it's sad that they don't realise what they are doing to you.  what kind of life do they expect you to have if they don't learn to but out?!?!  i suppose they'll be in the hotel room with you on your wedding night as well?  dude... take your lumps until you're 18, then give your parents the boot!

  3. You are living under your parents roof you have to live by their rules.

Wait until your 18 and then move out and do whatever you want.   They can not stop you from getting a drivers license after your 18.

  4. I got my first job when I was 14, and I've been there for 2yrs. I would say to get a part-time job secretly and prove to them that you can handle it. Maybe if they see that you can, they might allow it.

  5. you can get a part time job but don't let is effect your school grades.

i don't believe any 16 year old should drive a car they are too immature.  read the newspapers and see how many accidents there are involving teenagers.  the other night 2 boys were killed and 2 girls in hospital due to an auto accident.  every week this happens and everyone is upset.  if parents didn't allow the children to drive in first place, they would still be alive. we lose many children due to driving too early. the law should be changed. listen to your parents.

as far as college goes they have to let go.

  6. aye aye aye.  That sounds really harsh... Can't say I have much advice except to just go and apply for one yourself.  You are a young adult now, anyways, so it's better than nothing!  They can't control you your whole life!
