oooooook.. so im redoing my entire rooom and me and my parents found this bed that we absolutlyyy LOVE, but its difficult to think of a place in my room to put it cos my room isnt so big,and one night while thinkin of how to rearrange my room i finally got this place to put my new bed ,but my parents disagree with it because they believe in this 'chinese belief' that says if your head is under a window in your room and like ur bed is facing the direction to where the window is facing its bad luck because its like your in a coffin? like it means death or something? and i dont really believe in it but they do sooooo im wondering if this belief is true? or are my parents just superstitious? OH and my bed is currently under my window too.

  1. It's just a superstition. Everyone has them.

  2. So that's where my family got it , from the Chinese. All my life my mothers ,mother  taught her chidren that stuff. Well I say what would Jesus do .WWJD? Do you think that it is witchcraft  or is that something that God made a rule about? Keep your eyes on Jesus.

  3. Your parents sound as if they were raised by people whose elders had this belief that has been brought upon and was passed down through the generations of your family.

While you might not agree with their decision and they may not even have, what you think is a stupid or silly reason, but do respect them and their wishes by not placing your bed in the direction that they don't want you to.

If your parents haven't bought the bed for you yet, don't worry because there will be other beds that you might even like even better and if you get this bed now, they probably won't buy another one for you later on.

In a way, I don't see the fact that they don't want you to have your bed facing out towards the window as being 'a Chinese belief', but much more of a safety issue because if your bedroom is on a first floor facing the front of the house and in the summertime, you decide to open your window to get some cool air, what's to stop a stranger from opening your window while you are asleep and hurting you in some way?

You aren't quite old enough to understand certain things yet <now, I'm not saying you aren't mature enough to understand>, but with the crazy world we live in, I don't think I would let you have your bed face the window, either <no offense!>.

I don't know what kind of space you have to work with, what kind of furniture you are talking about <whether it is just a twin-sized bed, matching nightstand, matching dresser and bureau with mirror or if it is simply a bed or what>, so please don't be upset, but you have to look at it from a decorator's eye...If you went into someone's house for the first time looking for the bathroom and accidentally opened up their bedroom door and saw the back of a headboard in the middle of a room, what would you think? <Wouldn't you think it looked sort of silly and wonder why it was arranged this way?>

I know, you are probably thinking 'Whateva...it's MY room', but your parents are YOUR PARENTS and they know what's best in THEIR house. <Sorry!>

  4. Yeah, that's from Feng Shui. It's all about how furniture arrangement and shape supposedly affects the enegry flow in the home, and in turn the health and happiness of those who live there. Some of the stuff is a little strange, but all in all, following the principles at the very least creates a beautiful home. I don't know if I'd say it actually works, but some things like colors have been shown to influence mood.

  5. Better safe than sorry.

  6. Put your bed wherever you want. It's just a piece of furniture, for crying out loud. I've lived in many different houses with beds positioned every which way, and I never had a problem.

Besides, if something happens later and you start to have second thoughts about where you put it, it's not like you can't just move it somewhere else.

  7. In Feng Shui it is supposed to be bad for chi to have certain arrangements of furniture. The one I heard is to never have your bed with the feet facing the door out, because that's how dead bodies are taken from the room. (I had a room as a teen where my bed was positioned this way. One day I moved it, and my dad, who doesn't believe in any of this superstition, remarked how much better the room looked that way.)

http://home.ivillage.com/decorating/feng... discusses the best and worst placement of a bed according to Feng Shui. I would think, from what you describe, that just flipping the bed around so that you -face- the window when you sleep would be satisfactory. (The reason the window is supposed to be a bad placement for a bed is that the rush of chi from the window comes at your head all night and is said to make you emotionally restless and agitated, and plus there's no 'support' behind you which also toys with your emotions.)

Admittedly, often if there is no other way you can place something, there are "remedies" you can add to the room to counter them. This might appease your parents. For example, if you have the bed under the window, getting heavy, sturdy blinds (like wooden or made from reeds) or even some shutters and keeping them closed at night might counteract it. Your parents might be willing to buy them for you since they're the ones complaining.
