Parents medical bills?

If she/he live with me and totally depending on me with no income (beside SS) when they try to apply for medicare do they go with my pay scale?

And if she/he gets sick, let's say have a big bills, and decease, will I be responsible for the bills (the balance after a life insurance)? She/he has NO estate.

If there is anything I have to do to make sure bills won't come after me ( if I wouldn't be responsible) such as paper works etc, I would like to know that, too.

Thank you in advance.

  1. You will not be responsible for her medical payments, but be sure you don't goof up and sign any financial responsibility forms.  If she is elderly you can be a medical guardian so you can make medical decisions for her without taking on financial responsibilities.

Not sure how her death will effect life insurance payments....you can make a fast call to a probate attorney and see if they can give you some quick advice, or discuss "asset protection" ideas.  Might be worth a few dollars.

  2. No, you will not be responsible. You can let the creditors know that this person is no longer living and they should stop sending bills. Good luck

  3. No, they go with the income the person has which will be his or her SS.  Well, bill collectors will try to collect from anybody related to the person but you are not liable for this or anyone except the person who incurred in the debt.  So just keep records if the person passes that you have that certificate to show them you have no recourse for the debt.
