I have a paper for my Education course at my college. I need to write on a Parent that has a child with special needs and that family has to be a different cultural background than mine (I am hispanic). If it is not too much trouble.....please tell me:

1. Your feeling on how well the school your child attends has met the needs of you child.

2. The strengths and weaknesses that school has.

I greatly apprecatiate it. I am planning on being a special education teacher and any opinions a parent has on their childs education will be taken into perspective in my procees of becoming the best I can be in my field. Thanks!!

  1. I have an autistic child.

It took 2 years to get an IEP that was workable and to see my child start meeting the goals. Last year, we had a teacher who was more afraid of setting my child off than making the child mind. I think the teacher was afraid of a child with autism, b/c she didn't understand it. Of course, she has not attended workshops for it either, I guess no interest.

This year my child in the 2nd year of 1st grade, 2 of OT, 3rd year of speech therapy and 3rd year of counselling. The teacher expects the best from my child and gets great results. Of course, the writing assignments aren't always on topic, but we are getting the child to write. Last year, that would not have happened, and didn't. I think the school is meeting the need this year, but it's not due to administration, it's solely the teacher working HARD for my child's best interests.

Weaknesses of the school; oblivous administration. They talk a good line and don't follow through. They would prefer to transfer a student to a special school than work to improve the system.

Strengths... Diagnostician who can help teachers with info on autism, if they want to learn. Good ECteacher this year... last year's was a s***w-up... Regular ed teacher pushing for good work and expecting more rather than just lowering the standards and saying they won't be achieved.

I hope this helps. I hope you do well in your education and later, your field... we need more professionals who CARE.

" and the greatest of these is LOVE"... remember to love the children.

  2. 1. The current school my child is going to is attending to his needs as best they can. (private school) His previous school (public) Just lowered his IQ,self-esteem,and self-worth.

2.Strengths:More one on one attention, modify his environment to help him finish his homework, give lots of praise through out the day, speak kindly to him without leaving out detail as to how he can change things. Won't give up on him. Will still ask him to try his grade level of work. Allow me to be hands on with his schooling. Weaknesses: Not enough staff to fully put in the time needed for him.
