Parents of children (females in particular) who have ADHD?

I've read so many questions and answers on here that are derogatory and down right rude about this disorder.Today my 15 year old daughter went to pick up a G.C.S.E result, shes not due to sit the rest until next year.My daughter was diagnosed last year with male trait ADHD.She was regularly excluded from school for violent conduct etc.I just wanted to give hope to other parents who have a child with ADHD...my child gained a B today,I am so proud of her.My child is on Ritalin, not a choice I or her father made easily...but as much as this isn't a question I would like to know how people who put ADHD kid's and parents down would like to respond to my daughters turn around in behaviour and academic wise...as so often bad behaviour is accredited to bad parenting?

  1. Not really an answer; more of an opinion.

You are not a bad parent.  I applaud you for acknowledging your child has a problem and seeking help for her.  My daughter was diagnosed in elementary school and was put on Ritalin.  Today there are other drugs besides Ritalin, but I have no experience with them.  Yes, her school grades improved as she was better able to concentrate on what she was doing.  Unfortunately, when her dad and I split and she went to live with him, he took her off of her medication and her school work suffered.  She got through, but just barely.  There will be those who think ADD/ADHD can be controlled without drugs, because as you say, they believe it is all about bad parenting.  I am sure they haven't dealt with these children.

  2. i will pass this information on to my daughter, who has 2 boys 15yrs/8yrs.they are a nightmare, many a time my daughter has pulled her hair out.both boys got diagnosed when they were 4yrs old.they were on that ritalin, but heard it has speed in it,so they don't take it anymore.well done to your daughter.also for you, being a good mother.its hard when you have a child with ADHD.good luck.xx

  3. I am so happy for your daughter.  I am struggling about putting my 9 yr old Daughter on meds for her ADHD.  I really don't want to, but as she gets older, it gets worse, i may have not choice.  She also has violent tendencies.

Best of luck to your daughter.

  4. cant begin to imagine how proud you must be.I Have a14 year old son who was diagnosed with adhd 8 years ago..we have had unbelievable problems with him.he is now on risperidone.do not feei any guilt at all about needing the medication for your daughter.scott was a happier child altogether when they got his medication right.Iused to think i was a diabolical mother but with success stories like yours there is hope for us all.ONCE AGAINcogratulations.

  5. You were never a bad parent, just an uninformed one because the medical profession doesn't want you to know about effective nondrug treatments.  There are therapies that are 100% effective without drugs such as neurofeedback, biofeedback, light therapy, and EEG therapy.  Here is a site that uses one such technology:

  6. Aw hun your daughter's exam result was brilliant. Your daughters behaviour is not down to bad parenting, she has a disorder triggered by the male ( no offence to your husband intended ).

It's good to read about an ADHD child triumphing over their adversities, I only wish my son's school were as understanding & as patient as they claim to be, when we attended prior to him starting there.

Most schools see children with this disorder merely as pound signs, especially if they have a statement of special educational needs.

Well done to your daughter, I hope her other exams are as successful as this one.

    Good Luck. X :-)
